In January, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce unanimously approved our 2019 Legislative Priorities. They can be located by clicking here.
In reviewing of our priorities, we discussed the current proposed legislation on property tax rollback(s).
Proposed House Bill 2 and Senate Bill 2 would require an election when local governments want to collect an additional 2.5 percent or more in tax revenues from existing properties. We believe these bills would greatly impact Georgetown’s ability to properly plan and provide existing services to our community.
Additionally:
- Fast-growth areas like Georgetown will not be able to respond adequately or keep up with area growth without an annual ratification election.
- Create a $2.1 million deficit over three years impacting and damaging public safety, economic development, and transportation.
- Property taxes will continue to rise because school district taxes – the real cause of high property taxes in Texas – will continue to escalate.
We encourage our members to engage in the process and contact their state leaders and allow our local elected officials to make decisions that best impact Georgetown.
